Which ipod do you have, first generation or second generation iphone? If 1st gen, then you probably need to get the second gen.
EDIT: to find out what generation it is...does it have speakers, physical volume control buttons? If not, you have 1st generation. If it does, you have second generation and then I would seek Apple Support.
